How ‘Pro-Choice’ are Democrats?

Posted by Richard on September 6, 2012

When Socialist Democrats talk about being “pro-choice,” they’re invariably referring to a woman’s right to choose abortion over childbirth. Reason TV went to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and asked delegates and attendees about some other choice issues, like what you choose to put in your body, what school you choose for your child, and whether you choose to join a union. The result is amusing and (to me at least) not at all surprising.

It seems that Socialist Democrats strongly support your right to make the choices they approve of. And the government’s “right” to stop you from making “bad” choices.

Posted by Richard on April 28, 2010

The Cartel, a feature-length documentary about the failures of the public school system and attempts to reform it, is premiering in Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and St. Louis on Friday, April 30, and in Denver on Tuesday, May 4. Special events and speakers are planned in many locations on opening night; go here for city-by-city information.

In Denver, the film will play at the Chez Artiste, 2800 S. Colorado Blvd. The 7 PM May 4 showing will be co-hosted by the Independence Institute and Liberty on the Rocks. Institute President John Caldera will speak briefly before the film, so arrive early. Afterward, Pam Benigno and Ben DeGrow of the Institute's Education Policy Center will take questions and lead discussion.

The film, which focuses on New Jersey schools, has won numerous awards and lots of critical praise. It sold out its New York premier and screenings across New Jersey. Watch the trailer below, and some clips from the film here

Fleeing Canada for health care choice

Posted by Richard on February 23, 2010

A statist politician presiding over a government with a single-payer health care system has uttered the most succinct, pithy, and on-point argument possible against government-controlled health care. Via Mark Steyn:

If I were minded to make a health care TV ad, I'd rustle up the Premier of Newfoundland's interview on NTV last night. Justifying his decision to eschew the pleasures of the monopoly government health care system he presides over for heart surgery in a Florida hospital, Danny Williams told his fellow Newfs:

It's my health, it's my choice.

As Scaramouche points out, there's your slogan

By the way, the Canadian state does not accept that proposition, which is why, if a Canadian such as Mr Williams wishes to exercise his choice he is obliged to leave the country.

If the Democrats cram Obamacare down our throats, where will Premier Danny Williams and his countrymen go to exercise health care choice? Where will we go?
