Hyper-realism

Posted by Richard on August 8, 2010

If your idea of modern realist paintings is Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup cans, check out these stunning examples of hyper-realism. I love this stuff, especially Eric Christensen's work. The way he portrays glassware and its reflections is simply amazing.

Most of these painters might as well have spared themselves the effort and taken a ruddy photo. But I agree, Christensen is good.

Some of the works (by Mills and Campos, in particular) could be pretty well replicated photographically. But only some. Certainly not Bernardi’s or Christensen’s.

Art, Rand said, is the selective recreation of reality. These are “hyper-realistic,” but they’re still ”selective recreations.” You couldn’t duplicate Bernardi’s sink painting with a camera. The camera wouldn’t leave out what he left out and emphasize what he emphasized. IMHO, anyway. 🙂
